Justice Akanbi Pledges Annual Donation of N600,000 to Kwara Special Needs School
A former Appeal Court President, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has pledged an annual donation of N600,000 to the Kwara State School for Special Needs.
Akanbi, who is also a past chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, announced the donation on Friday when he visited the school on the Old Jebba Road, Ilorin, as part of activities marking his 80th birthday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
He pledged to redeem his pledge at a monthly rate of N50, 000, adding that the gesture was his birthday gift to the students.
Akanbi, who is the founder and chairman of Mustapha Akanbi Foundation and Ma'asalaam Islamic Foundation said God had been very kind to him, even after his retirement.
He said that the way to appreciate God's favour on him was to spread the hand of fellowship to the less privileged in the society.
He also visited the Kwara Resource Centre, the Motherless Babies Home, the Nigeria Prisons and Muslim Cemetery, where he advised all well-meaning Nigerians to place priority on helping their fellow human beings who needed assistance.
Reacting to the gesture at the school for special needs, the Principal of the school, Alhaja Fatima Raji, said the school was saddled with responsibilities in taking care of the students, who she said, were intellectually-challenged and hearing-impaired.
"In spite of disability, we have a lot of ability in them. What we are doing here is to make sure we train them to become economically-independent after their school programme," she said.
Raji commended Akanbi for identifying with the students and prayed God to give him good health and long life to enable him do more of selfless service.
At the Motherless Babies Home, the Director of the Centre, Alhaja Iyabo Maiyaki, thanked the host for his usual visitations to the centre.
She commended the retired jurist for the wonderful package and cash gifts, while praying that God should continue to answer his prayers.
