Kwara Assembly probes students' protests
Following what it described as "disturbances in some state higher institutions," the Kwara state House of Assembly on Tuesday ordered its Committee on Education and Human Capital Development to probe causes of the recent students' protests in three of the state-owned higher institutions of learning.
This followed a 'Matter of General Public Importance' raised by Hon Suleiman Sunaboro (Ilesha/Gwanara constituency) on the recent protest by students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Molete; Kwara state Polytechnic and the College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi, respectively.
The Deputy Speaker, Prof Mohammed Gana Yisa, who presided over the plenary, maintained that though some of the institutions have resolved the problems, but the parliament had no knowledge on the causes of the protests.
Blueprint recalls that KWASU students shortly before the commencement of the second semester examination protested the closure of registration by the school authority, while students of Kwara Polytechnic protested lack of power supply few weeks after the Polytechnic students riot.
Also, the Lafiagi students last week went on rampage protesting what they called payment for signing of their course forms.
The deputy speaker described the Lafiagi students protest as "outrageous," where according to him, several valuable equipments were destroyed by the protesters with over 150 laptops stolen.
He said: "The crises in Kwara Poly and KWASU have been resolved, but the house did not have information on what really transpired, we only read it in the newspapers and there is need for the house to investigate the issue in order to find lasting solution to it.
"I was told that in Lafiagi protest, all valuable equipment were destroyed or stolen by the protesting students. I heard that over 150 laptops were stolen. I also learnt that some staff personal vehicles were destroyed."
