KWASU announces closure of registration after 2 months extension

Date: 2016-11-17

Management of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has announced the closure of students’ registration for the 2016/2017 Academic Session.
A statement signed by the Director, Office of the University Relations, and made available to journalists on Thursday, clarified that due to the prevailing economic recession in the country, the University Management had taken steps to help by giving an extension of two months for new and returning students to register for the 2016/2017 academic year.

“Course registration actually closed since September, 2016. Yet, the University ushered in late registration periods way beyond the usual ones, and weekly extended late registration for more than two months, which now finally closed on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at 12 midnight, with due and adequate warning to students,” the statement noted.

It added that Add and Drop period, expected long after the course registration closes, is already on, and that the end of Harmattan Semester Examination starts on December 2, 2016.

According to the statement, “As a way of assisting students and their parents, any student who has paid partial fees and who has not registered and who is eligible for refund should immediately apply to the University for refund of such fees.

“Furthermore, KWASU will interact with JAMB to explore the possibility of giving admission deferment to fresh students who secured admission but are unable to register for financial or any other important reasons. The University will communicate to those involved.”

The Management also emphasised that the University could not keep student course registration open eternally, as its stable and sacrosanct calendar would not allow that. “The University has to draw a line somewhere, and we have drawn such a line according to the structure of the University Calendar to allow for Add and Drop period and allow those who registered for courses to have enough time to prepare for the Harmattan Semester examinations,” it declared. For the returning students unable to register owing to financial or other reasons, the Management said it had given them an opportunity to apply for leave from studies till next academic year. “Such letter should reach the University Registrar without delay,” it added.

“Your University (Your KWASU!) which has now earned the 15th ranking position among Nigerian universities has to be up and doing in enforcing quality and a reliable academic calendar however tough. Even if the University keeps student course registration open till next year (2017), way after the first semester ended, some students due to financial reasons may not be able to register, and that is apart from the destruction such action would have caused the sanctity of a KWASU stable academic calendar,” the statement maintained.
