Kwara first lady tells women to embrace vocational skills

Date: 2016-11-12

The wife of Kwara Governor, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, has called on women in the country to embrace vocational skills in order to be self-reliant.

Ahmed made the appeal at the launching of Vocational Training Centre and flag off of Main Trade Fair, on Friday in Ilorin. The event is an initiative of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

The launching was in collaboration with Life Empowers Anchors Hope (LEAH) Foundation of Ahmed, held in Ilorin. She advocated women emancipation, stressing the need for women in politics. She described the initiative of the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Ayinke Saka, as laudable.

The governor's wife advised women to always be conscious and do away with dangerous cultural practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Besides, she advised women to embrace regular breast test in order to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Ahmed commended the citizens for their patience and perseverance. Saka had earlier said that the government remained committed to the welfare of women and physically challenged persons in the state. The commissioner said the occasion was made possible with the support, love and benevolent leadership of Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Highlights of the event included the launching of the Vocational Training Centres, distribution of mobility aids to physically challenged persons and bounties to twins and triplets by Ahmed.
