Kwara monarch urges FG on cyber-space's control

Date: 2016-08-18

The Emir of Shonga in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, Dr Haliru Yahyah, has called on Federal government to be cautious of imminent danger posed by cyber-space, just as he said failure to effectively managed and controlled it, can cause serious crisis in the country.

Yahyah made the disclosure yesterday, while delivering a paper on "Roles of traditional rulers in sustaining peace in community" at a Peace Summit organized by Passion for Peace Initiative, Kwara state Ministry of Information and Communications, National Orientation Agency and Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, held at banquet hall.

The first class monarch frowned at negative ways social media is being used, saying that "unedited and unconfirmed reports are filtering the social media which portend serious danger to the unity of the country."

Yahyah therefore stressed need for the cyber space to be used positively towards repositioning the country and advancing its technology and culture to global world. On activities of fulani herdsmen, the Emir of Shonga, described it as an emergency situation and must be urgently addressed by the government.

According to him, not all fulanis are herdsmen and pastorals, pointing out that there are some illegal immigrants from the neighbouring Niger Republic hiding under guise of fulani herdsmen to perpetrate such disastrous criminal acts. Yahyah cautioned that the illegal immigrants are threat to the country and tasked government and relevant agencies to look into use and secure the country's boarders from external invasions.

The Emir Shonga suggested that a Committee should be set up to provide information to traditional institutions about the activities of fulani herdsmen rustling cattles in their domains which would enable them to acquire basic information about the fulanis and forestall killings of innocent people.
