May Day: Kwara traditional rulers commend workers' perseverance

Date: 2016-05-02

Some traditional rulers in Kwara on Sunday commended workers across the country for their resilience, steadfastness and perseverance in the face of many challenges.

The monarchs in their messages commended workers for their support that contributed to the sustenance of the nation's democratic system occasioned by the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections. Oba Ibitoye said that the act of steadfastness, perseverance and dedication to duty exhibited by the workers in spite of the country's lingering economic fortunes deserved commendation from Nigerians.

He praised the workers for putting the nation's interest above their personal gains, urging them to continue to discharge their civic responsibilities with utmost humility and dedication. Oba Okinbaloye on his part, said Nigerian workers have no doubt demonstrated their capabilities as a driving force toward attaining the nation's growth, progress and socio-economic development.

He particularly commended the state and local government workers for their understanding and steadfastness in the face of several months of unpaid salaries and allowances. "For some months now, majority of the local government councils were faced with financial difficulties as a result of the drop in the allocation from the Federation Account to the states.

"As expected, this actually affected prompt settlement of some of the councils' financial obligations including salaries and allowances. "But with the understanding, cooperation and resilience of the workers, the chairmen are able to plan ahead and move forward as far as the council administration is concerned.

"This action of the workers deserves our commendation as traditional rulers and custodians of culture, heritage and traditions," he said. Dada, in his own remark, expressed optimism of an improved economy, which would translate into a better working condition for the workers after the 2016 budget had been signed by the President.

He urged the workers to continue to demonstrate honesty and trustworthiness, adding they should shun acts capable of tarnishing their image and those of their respective organisations. Besides, Dada advised the workers to accord priority to improving themselves academically in order to continue to be relevant in the discharge of their civic responsibilities.

"You should always avail yourself the opportunity of training and retraining in both your academic status and on the job, so as to be more productive," he counselled. (NAN)
