Kwara CPC member wants June 12 as National Day
A 2011 elections campaign coordinator for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Kwara State, yesterday described the major beneficiaries of the 'June 12, 1993' democratic struggles as ingrates.
The coordinator, Ismail Mohammed, while speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Democracy Day celebrations, said even when certain politicians agree that June 12 be declared Democracy Day, they are still pretenders of some sort.
His words; "We agree that June 12 was without doubt the undeclared "Democracy Day" in Nigeria's political history. The major beneficiaries of the June 12 struggles are political ingrates and pretenders."
"Apart from reaping where they did not sow, they continued to insult the sacrifice of genuine democrats and Nigerians whose struggle enthroned democracy and on whose back they rode to power."
Ismail urged Nigerians to come together to fight for the recognition of June 12 as the real and official "Democracy Day" by the Federal Government and not just a section of the country saying; "This will give credit to whom it's due when it comes to who truly was the father of Democracy in Nigeria."
Declaring what he called his position, he said; "This cannot continue. True democrats are celebrating June 12 and clamouring for its official declaration as democracy day. We join in this clamour as much as we believe in it."
