Police arraign two over armed robbery
Police in Ilorin have arraigned two suspected armed robbers, Hamza Fatai, 21 and Jamiu Isiaka, 19, both of Eruda Area, Ilorin, before an Ilorin Magistrate Court for allegedly dispossessing residents of their valuables.
The accuses were brought before the court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, contrary to Sections 97 of Penal Code and 1(2) of Armed Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap Rll, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.
The accused along with one other(now at large) were said to have on May 24, 2012 committed the crime having dispossessed the victim of their valuables at gun point.
They were indicted following a complaint at the office of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Offa Division by Oyedele Muideen and Ibrahim Yetunde both of Wale Clinic Area, Osunte, Offa, Kwara State, that three suspected hoodlums who were armed with locally made pistols invaded their residence.
The accused allegedly accosted one of the complainants, Muideen at the frontage of the house, marched him inside and ordered him to knock the doors of his co-tenants one after the other at gun point.
According to the complainants, the accused gained entrance into Yetunde's room where they dispossessed her of three Nokia X2, C2 and 2700 GSM handsets valued at N36,000.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that Muideen later summon courage and engaged one of the hoodlums in a fight and also shouted for help which attracted the attention of other neighbours to the scene.
Consequently, the first accused, Hamza Fatai was allegedly arrested with a locally made pistol while the others two escaped and he was handed over to NSCDC officers.
The FIR stated further that the second accused, Jamiu Isiaka was subsequently arrested on May 26, 2012 as a result of which they were dragged before the court.
The FIR added that investigation conducted at Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) office, Ilorin, revealed that the accused and one Musa, aka Last Born said to beat large invaded the residence of the complainants at Offa on May 24 at about 9:30pm with an intention to commit robbery.
According to the FIR, "the suspects actually put their intentions into manifestation by robbing one of the victims of three GSM handsets at gun point before luck ran against them and one of them was arrested at the scene."
The FIR added further that the accused came from Ilorin to Offa on May 21 to join the fleeing third accused (Musa) who is a resident of Offa. Also, the stolen handsets were said to be in his possesion.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Matthew Ologbonsaye informed the court that investigation into the matter is yet to be completed. He objected to their bail and urged the court to remand them at the prison custody, Ilorin, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Magistrate S. Olanikewu. Who presided over the case acceded to the submission of the prosecutor as he ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala, Ilorin, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The court adjourned the case till June 14, 2012 for further mention.
