Many injured as polytechnic students protest fee hike in Kwara
A student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, reportedly fainted while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries as they protested hike in their tuition fees on Tuesday.
Tribune Online gathered that the students, who trooped into major streets in Ilorin metropolis, barricaded major highway at Eleko area, situated around the school and made bonfire, thereby causing traffic gridlock.
It was gathered that the protest paralysed social and commercial activities in such areas as Oke Oyi, Old Jebba road, Eleko, Zanngo, Post Office, among other areas of the state capital as the students chanted songs while they marched around.
It was said that many of the protesters sustained injuries when law enforcement agents came to disperse them, while one of them reportedly fainted and was rushed to a private hospital.
It was also gathered from the students that the school management increased HND students' tuition fees by N15,000, while that of ND students was increased by N10,000.
"Some of us have not even paid the old fees and they are still adding to it," some of the students lamented.
In its reaction, the management of the institution denied increasing the school fees, saying the additional fee was for late registration, and that the N10,000 penalty had been reviewed downward to N5,000.
The statement by deputy registrar media and publication, Alhaji Moshood Amuda, said, "Further to our earlier announcement, the management of the polytechnic has held its meeting. Arising from the meeting, it was resolved that the penalty for late registration should be reviewed downward to N5,000 intead of N10,000. To students who have paid the penalty of N10,000, the management will make arrangement to refund the difference. Students are advised to be law abiding.
"We view with great concern the reaction of some of the students this morning against the penalty for late registration. We appeal to all parents, staff and students to remain calm and peaceful as the management is taking urgent step to review the situation. We implore students of Kwara Poly to vacate the highway and desist from acts of public disturbance."
