Ahmed calls for unity among NBA members…As Kwara Speaker advocates national honour for soldiers jailed on Boko-Haram war

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has stressed the need for stronger unity among members of the bar.

He gave the advice in Ilorin weekend while speaking at the 2015 Annual Bar dinner and award night organized by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin branch.

Governor Ahmed also advised the leadership of the bar to run an all inclusive government and not an antagonistic administration to ensure hat the rule of law was upheld.

While noting that the NBA should be role model for other professional bodies, he urged members of the bar to jettison all forms of acrimony and rancour. He called on members of the bar to be upright in their professional calling and dealings with their clients.

The governor who was represented by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kamaldeen Ajibade, commended the efforts of the national body of NBA in checking the acts of fake and quack lawyers.

He urged members to be supportive and cooperate with the leadership at all times. He said his administration was very committed to the rule of law which he described as the core objective of his government

He said "our task is to ensure that government remain committed to safe-guiding the constitutional liberty of the people of the state to ensure that justice was not available but also affordable. He solicited the support of members of the bar to ensure the realization of good governance for the people of the state.

He said members of the bar should be encouraged to take free cases to assist indigent and the less privileged litigants.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad has said the decision of Court Marshal where many military personnel were jailed or condemned to death for various offences relating to the fight against Boko-Haram should be reversed.

He said with the revelation of arms deal scandal, it had clearly shown that soldiers were not well equipped to fight insurgency.

Dr Ahmad in an interview with newsmen on the occasion, said the revelation of arms deal scandal was an indication the result of anti corruption crusade of the President was being felt.

He said "the least Mr President can do for those soldiers that have been sentenced to death is for the decision to be reversed and they must be given national honour".

He said the culprits of arms deal must be exposed and made to face the wrath of the law.

In his welcome address, the chairman of care-taker committee of Ilorin branch of NBA, Sir Joseph Bamigboye (SAN) said the essence of the yearly programme was to emphasize unity and oneness among members of the bar.

Also speaking, the chairman of 2015 dinner/award night committee, Barrister Salisu Ahmed described the programme as one of the avenues to unwind outside the court room.

He implored members to key into the newly identified alternative to medicine due to very stressful nature of the profession, work load, mental commitment, engagements, constant traveling among others.

The awardees included Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Dr Ali Ahmad, Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Duroshilohun Kawu and his Kogi state counterpart, Justice Nasiru Ajannah, Chief P A O Olorunnisola SAN, Mallam Yusuf Ali SAN, Sir Joseph Bamgboye SAN, Kehinde Kolawole Eleja SAN, Prof Abdulwahab Egbewole, Prof M M Akanbi, Prof A T Shehu among others.
