Kwara Utd Graceful in Journey to the Lower League
Ossy Martin and Alebiosu Segun scored two second half goals against FC IfeanyiUbah yesterday to ensure Kwara United finished the season with a clean home record but their darling fans wore mournful faces all through the game as the victory was meaningless. It failed to keep them in the Glo Premier League.
United Chief Coach Tunde Abdulrahaman featured the best legs in his squad with skipper Dare Ojo and Bobga Sambo leading the pack while FC Ifeanyiubah's coach, John Obuh, equally presented his regulars.
The last match-day offered a lot in terms of entertainment generally as the hosts took the game to their guests early in the tie.
Saka Habeeb started by floating a long range free kick to Seriki Jelili who headed into the waiting hands of Ifeayiubah goalkeeper Okekem Anderson, The keeper who was kept busy for greater part of the game again parried a straight shot from Dare Ojo's free kick and stood tall against the hosts to maintain a clean sheet till end of the first half.
His opposing number, Ayeleso Suraj, was not really tested by the visitors though Eze Uchenna and Ohanu Michael combined well midway in the game to beat United's midfield but lost possession near the box. In the second half, Anderson continued with his brilliant saves but could not stop the desperate United players who were out to prove a point in their last match in the top flight this season.
Ossy Martin, a former ABS star broke the deadlock in the 61st minute while Alebiosu Segun sealed victory for the hosts minutes later. Unlike in the past when Ilorin fans unleashed terror to protest their team's demotion, the supporters were sober this time around as they rally round to console the players who have endured a poor season.
Kwara United coach, Tunde Abdulrahaman, spoke with npfl.ng in a post match conference: "I feel terrible that United went down under my watch. It's sad but the blame is not totally mine because I was not given a free hand to tutor the club. I was in and out due to interference, all the same, I"m pained that United are not playing in the Premier League next season".
Coach John Obuh of Ifeanyiubah said: "it's a pity that my former club, Kwara United, has been relegated. I wish they escaped but that's football. However, no comment on today's match, but I want to go home and rest after leading this great club in a competitive league season. The LMC however deserves applause for the smooth organisation of the league," concludes the former national coach.
