Justify confidence reposed on you, Gov Ahmed charges new Perm Secs

Date: 2015-11-04

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State yesterday swore-in new 14 Permanent Secretaries and redeployed others with a view to sustaining good governance and enhanced performance.

The governor who stressed that the choice of the new permanent secretaries was informed by the fact that they had been active participants in the administration of the state, advised them to bring to bear sterling qualities in "our rigorous pursuit of the shared prosperity programme of my administration for the benefit of the populace".

He emphasized that "this appointment should spur you to further pursue your assignments with due diligence and commitment for efficient and effective service delivery". Governor Ahmed who admonished them to justify the confidence reposed on them, said "by your appointments, the good people of Kwara State have bestowed on you their confidence. It is therefore expected that you put in your best to justify the confidence reposed on you.

"It is also expected that you will use all resources at your disposal to serve the people to the best of your ability". While congratulating them on their new appointment, the governor urged them to shun corruption and other ills capable of bringing their names into disrepute and mar the image of the state.

"I also expect you to exhibit required leadership and entrench best practices of due process, accountability, and transparency. "Indeed, you are coming on board at a crucial period in our economy. Today, the realities of the economic challenges are upon us. In the last eighteen months, Federal allocation to the state has dwindled consistently.

"Consequently, I expect you, as chief accounting officers of your respective ministries, departments and agencies, to champion our renewed drive for prudent and judicious utilization of public resources as well as enhanced revenue generation. "However, it is pertinent to emphasize that this need for prudence and other adjustments to our new economic realities apply to all citizens and residents of our state. We must all cut our coats according to our cloth.

"The economic survival and sustenance of our state is a task that must be achieved with the participation of all citizens. In this new dispensation, therefore, it is incumbent on you to sufficiently drive your Ministries, Departments and Agencies to generate revenue for Government. "As you are aware, this administration has set up the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service to enable us generate adequate revenue that will be used for the development of the state", the governor submitted.

The state Head of Service, Hajia Omar Zhara had earlier in her introductory remarks said the appointment of new permanent secretaries became necessary in order to re-invigorate the service and respond positively to civil service. She further explained that their appointment was based on equity, justice and fairness, saying all stakeholders across the state had input in the appointment. Hajia Omar therefore, urged them to make excellent performance their watchword, explaining that "by this calling, you should see yourselves as administrative officers.

Responding on behalf of others, the newly sworn-in permanent secretary of political cabinet and social services, Mr David Afolabi Adeshina expressed gratitude to the governor for the appointment and promised to justify the confidence reposed on them.
