Residents nab suspected armed robbers in Kwara
In rare display of courage, some residents of Iluteju Community in Ilorin, Kwara State on Thursday morning arrested two suspected armed robbers who had reportedly robbed a victim around the area.
The armed robbers, it was learnt, stormed the community located behind the Muslim Cemetery around 7:00 a.m, raided a home where a sum of N500, 000 and vehicle were carted away.
Residents of the area said men of the underworld armed with guns and cutlasses came when the local vigilante had already left.
An eye witness told our correspondent that most of the residents were already awake when the armed robbers came for the operation.
According to the source, "Few of the residents chased the armed robbers and I think we noticed their guns malfunctioned or they have exhausted their bullets. So people descended on them and overpowered them".
The suspected bandits were tied in a rope by the residents as crowd thronged to observe what was happening. It was gathered that some residents also ransacked an uncompleted building where the armed robbers allegedly dumped their guns.
Leaders of the community later contacted the Surulere division of police to inform it of the arrest while the suspected armed robbers were later handed over to the division.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Okasanmi Ajayi confirmed the arrest, saying investigation is still ongoing. He commended the efforts of the Iluteju community which led to the arrest of the suspects.
Daily Trust reports that the community had in recent times experienced series of robbery attacks which necessitated the employment of night vigilantes to protect members of the community.
