Governors' Forum not against Constitutional Amendment - Governor Bukola Saraki

Date: 2009-11-20

The Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Bukola Sararki has debunked a media report that Governors were against Constitution Amendment in preparation for the 2011 general elections in the Country.

Dr Saraki debunked the statement credited to the governors on Monday while fielding questions from working journalists in the State as part of activities marking this years Eid-el-Fitri celebration.

Saraki, who is also the Kwara State Governor disclosed that the Governors’ Forum had all along been in support of amendment of the grey areas in the 1999 Constitution as it affects common interests of all the States of the Federation rather than those affecting only a few States.

Speaking further, he explained that issues like Electoral reforms, Judiciary and Revenue Allocation among others, are key to all States which should be looked into in the on-going amendments by the National Assembly .

According to him, a situation where people are already talking about the last stage of a process which has not even reach the first stage does not augur well for the system, pointing out that the National Assembly should be allowed to go on first with its assignment.

His words: "I want to assure you that as far as we governors are concerned, there is no such action or any move against the Constitutional reforms; we too are waiting eagerly for whatever is the format of what is passed by the National Assembly that would now be received at the States level for them to go through".

Dr Saraki also used the occasion to assure the people of the State that all on-going projects embarked upon by his administration  would be completed, most especially the various road projects, projects under the bond such as the State University, Aviation College, Cement factory among others as well as the Water pipeline distribution network of the Asa Dam expansion project.

He explained that the N 6.3 billion water pipeline distribution would commence next month to permanently address the perennial water problem in Ilorin metropolis.

Contractors for the project, the governor hinted, would soon move to site, adding that the pipeline distribution is expected to increase water supply in the metropolis from 12 Million gallons per day  to 24 Million gallons per day.

The governor, who had earlier received the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari (CFR) on a traditional Sallah homage at Government House, thanked the monarch for his fatherly advice and assured that all his promises to the traditional institution would be fulfilled.
