Crisis hits Kwara Labour Party over guber candidate
Ahead of the April 11 governorship election in Kwara State, the state chapter of Labour Party (LP) is currently enmeshed in a crisis over who is its governorship flag bearer.
Though Dr. Mike Omotosho has been nominated as the party's candidate, the nomination is currently being challenged by another aspirant, Alhaji Akeem Adelaja-Amao.
Adelaja-Amao was the sole aspirant of the party prior to the defection of Omotosho from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, the latter allegedly paid only for the expression of interest form and refused to pay for the nomination form while Omotosho is said to have fulfilled all the requirements to become the party's flag bearer, according to the party's Secretary, Comrade Abdulkareem Onagun who is now Omotosho's running mate.
The aspirant therefore insists that he remains the governorship candidate and vowed to challenge the nomination of Omotosho in court.
Daily Trust learnt that Adelaja-Amao has filed a suit at an Ilorin High Court, seeking the disqualification of Omotosho.
Joined in the suit which has been fixed for hearing on March 19 are national chairman of LP, Alhaji Abdulqadri Abdulsalam, national secretary, Olukayode Ajulo and Dr. Mike Omotosho.
The crisis worsened on Thursday when the state working committee announced the suspension of Adelaja-Amao for alleged anti-party activities.
The party chairman, Mr. Babalola Johnson who addressed a press conference said although Adelaja-Amao had been a good member, his conduct lately has been embarrassing to the party.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Adelaja-Amao said the purported suspension was laughable, adding that he is unaware of the party's decision.
"Nobody sat and said I have been suspended. So who suspended me? I have not heard, I am just hearing from you. Who suspended me? Let me just tell you the truth. There is so much irregularities in the Labour Party in Kwara State and I am just telling you the truth," he said.
