Chibok Schoolgirls: Don Urges Political Class to Close Ranks

Date: 2014-05-08

The Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Dr. Marfuz Adedimeji, has urged the political class in the country to close ranks in the quest to assist the government and security agencies to rescue the schoolgirls of Chibok from the insurgents.

Adedimeji said  the ongoing exchange of words among politicians would not help the matter, knowing that the issue at stake involves human lives.

The don, who  disclosed this in Ilorin yesterday while speaking with journalists on the state of the nation, also called on the federal government to adopt the “Carrot and Stick” option in its efforts to rescue the girls.

He said the political class should be mature enough to close ranks and strategise with the federal government so as to assist in rescuing the schoolgirls.

According to him, “It is disturbing the way and manner the politicians have been attacking themselves on the pages of newspapers instead of working insteal of working together towards finding the way to rescue the schoolgirls.”

He said they (politicians) should demonstrate maturity and strive harder to work in unity so as to get the girls rescued from the hands of the gunmen.

Adedimeji also stated that government must not close its doors against negotiation since lives were involved.
He noted: “What is required is more of intelligence action and that the approach should be hard and soft because there must be dignity in human life.”

Saying that: “When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers, the don added that “terrorists are animals so we should not reduce ourselves to their status because human lives are involved here, the government should rely more on soft option.”

He also expressed concern that the general situation in Nigeria today is bad to the extent that human life is being diminished.
“Setting human being ablaze alive without recourse to law and order and kidnapping both boil down to the fact that we have no value for life and this is very unfortunate,” he stressed.
