POROUS BORDER RESPONSIBLE FOR NIGERIA'S INSECURITY - AHMED

Date: 2014-05-05

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has said that the security challenge facing the country is as a result of porous borders, saying it is neither religious nor ethnic-based.

He spoke to newsmen in Ilorin on the outcome of the recent security seminar held for the 19 northern state governors by the United State Institute of Peace (USIP).

He said the seminar afforded the government of the United State opportunity to have a firsthand assessment of the security issue by listening to governors of the affected states, adding that the US government gave its words to assist Nigeria in overcoming the challenges.

Ahmed said what was clear to the America government was that the security challenge was not religious or ethnical but an incursion across the border.

“Why they are doing it and where they are going to is still very fluid to us but one thing that remains as clear as crystal is that they have a style that is destructive”, he added.

The governor who said the state government was providing the required logistics support to security agencies in the state tasked Nigerians to be security conscious.

He said: “We must recognise the fact that we are all involved in security activities, we must be each other’s keeper; we must watch our backs, when we see strange movement in our houses, in our environments, schools or hospitals, we shouldn’t just take it for granted. We must attempt to report to security agencies who would carry out further investigation to ensure that there is no threat to lives and property”.
