Opinion: Modibbo Kawu's bete noire for Bukola Saraki. By Ade Fakuyi

I read END GAME FOR BUKOLA SARAKI's KWARA HEGEMONY by Is'haq Modibbo Kawu in Vanguard Newspaper, 6th of March, 2014. Later, I stumbled on a rejoinder authored by the Spokesman of All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari.

Having read both, the raison d'etre for Mr Modibbo's article was simply the crowd at Metropolitan Square, Ilorin for a PDP rally. Mr President, Mr Vice President, Mr Senate President and others were in attendance.

The Spokesman of APC has analysed the politics of the crowd in his rejoinder. I have been reliably informed that PDP members were mobilized from about six(6) states including Mr President home state. It is free-from-error to conclude the nitty-gritty of Mr Modibbo's article has failed the test of facts and reality.

I have never had a close encounter with both Senator Bukola Saraki and Mr Modibbo Kawu but I know the duo well enough to author their biographies. Mr Modibbo has consistently displayed sheer hatred for Senator Saraki through his articles. It should surprise everyone that Mr Modibbo has never found anything good about him, that is the reality.

The greatest test of Senator Saraki's leadership and reign as governor for eight(8) years was the governorship election held on 26th of April,2011. On that day, Kwarans above age 18 had the franchise to either dump him or continue with his leadership. Senator Saraki had an option in his family choice aspirant and eventual candidate in the election but supported and ensured the victory of Governor Ahmed Abdulfatah. His action must have been in the best interest of Kwarans even at the detriment of his selfish or family interest.

The philosophy about leadership is simple. American management consultant and author, Peter Drucker said "There is no success without a successor". I believe a leader's lasting value is measured by succession.

Mr Modibbo is bitter about the transitional leadership between Former Governor, Bukola Saraki and the incumbent, Governor Ahmed Abdulfatai. This bitterness is ok but this transition is not unacceptable.

It is global. In U.S.A, the 26th American President, Theodore Roosevelt hand-picked his Secretary of War, William Howard Taft and worked to get him elected as a successor. It was acceptable to Americans.

If Abraham Lincoln had a successor who shared his vision, America's torrid racial issues may not have plagued them into the 20th century. His successor, Andrew Johnson had gone down memory lane as the first American President to be impeached. Whatever anyone will say or write about President Johnson's impeachment, the underlying factor was his preference for system of slavery.

In Lagos State, the transitional Leadership between Senator Bola Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Fashola has enhanced the fortune of the state, Lagosians have testimonies.

The Governor of Kwara State, Gov. Ahmed Abdulfatah is a Silent Performer. He has achieved much in Education, Agriculture, Infrastructure, Employment/Empowerment and Health without any noise. However, a performing Leader must flaunt his successes in Nigeria before he can be seen as a Performer. The quietness of Mr Governor is no longer fashionable. Those with his trumpets should start blowing them before a Modibbo will call him names.

Mr Modibbo is angry about the "humiliating poverty" of the people. The World Bank's country director, Ms Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly recently said 100million Nigerians live in extreme poverty. The unemployment rate has also worsened under the PDP government in Nigeria. Kwara State as a subset of Nigeria is bound to have a fair share of "humiliating poverty". What has Mr Modibbo's PDP done to arrest this menace?

The Kwara State government has done much in this regards. The government provided additional three(3) vocational centres in senatorial districts, no fewer than 5,000 kwarans have benefited from the Kwara State Bridge Empowerment Scheme(KWABES), about 2,000 kwarans were employed into the Civil Service just three(3) months ago, 500 teachers have been employed into Teaching Service Commission, about 9,000 kwarans are beneficiaries of the #674million disbursed under Kwara State Entrepreneurship Scheme from 2012 to date and 8,200 youths will benefit from the just kick-started Quickwin Empowerment Scheme 2014.

I know of a state government that hasn't employed 100 teachers in 6years and many others without history of serious employment or empowerment. Development is in Kwara State and a Modibbo shouldn't be telling us otherwise.

Mr Modibbo alleged the government has "continuously recycled" government appointees and functionaries. Ironically, this same personality made a case against generational shift of power just 4years ago.

In Daily Trust publication of August 26,2010, Mr Modibbo blasted exponents of generational shift of power. He said they have failed to "put across any meaningful radical ideas in the interest of independent national progress or the struggle against underdevelopment. Lurking under the call is a suspicion craving to be at the helm in other to be in control of Lucre". What is his defination of meaningful radical ideas?

Mr Modobbo can't pretend to be speaking for kwara youths now. Even at this established character inconsistencies, the allegation is untrue. There has been a dynamism in the personality and capacity of political appointees in the state. Personalities and Youths that are hitherto outside government or/and politics are now in government at various level. This can be effortlessly confirmed by everyone.

Mr Modibbo can continue to make wild allegations and abuse the personality of Senator Saraki but I haven't seen how it will transform to fortune for his cousin and governorship hopeful, Mr Dele Belgore.

If Senator Bukola Saraki maintains these - Hardwork, Accessibility and Generosity, his political relevancy which Mr Modibbo coined "hegemony" can only grow stronger in Kwara State.
