Justice, Fairness Must Guide Leaders, Says Don
Prof. Lanre Badmus of the Department of Religion, University of Ilorin, on Sunday said that justice and fairness must be the guiding principles of a good leader.
In a lecture he delivered in Ilorin, Badmus said that good leadership was imperative to the success and prosperity of any society.
The lecture had the theme: "Leadership Imperatives: Islamic Perspective".
It was organised by the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates' Association (UNIFEMGA).
The lecture was to mark the UNIFEMGA 2014 Day of Honour.
"Many people in leadership positions have forgotten justice; hence, the chaotic situations faced in societies.
"Lack of a good leader causes chaos in any society," Badmus said.
The professor of religion noted that Islam mandated that there must be a leader to direct affairs where there were three or more people.
According to him, leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.
"Leadership role starts as the head of a family, head of any given department and, of course, the head of a community, nationally and internationally."
The don said that leadership did not entail self- service but selfless service.
In his remarks, Prof. Shehu Jimoh, Chairman Governing Council, Kwara State Polytechnic, said that a leader must be accountable, patient and humble.
Jimoh added that a leader must be knowledgeable and accommodating.
Earlier in a welcome address, Prof. Abduwahab Egbewole, National President of UNIFEMGA, hailed the members of the association for their services to the association and the society.
He urged Muslims to eschew selfishness and do their best to please Allah.
Alhaji Niyi Afolayan, who spoke on behalf of 10 people honoured at the event by UNIFEMGA, thanked the association.
He pledged their continued allegiance to the organisation, and promised to continue to serve Allah and humanity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that UNIFENGA gave awards to 10 outstanding members of the association for their dedication. (NAN)
