Kwara House Rejects Executive Bill
The Kwara House of Assembly on Thursday rejected the passage of the Monitoring and Evaluation Bill sent by Gov. AbdulFatah Ahmed in January 2014.
The legislators rejected the passage of the bill after the majority Leader moved a motion for the second reading of the bill.
The lawmakers described the bill as "duplication of effort,'' saying it was not in consonance with section 128 of the constitution.
Tope Olayonu representing Ojomu-Balogun and Alhaji Hassan Oyeleke representing Essa-Sawo-Igboidun said the passage of the bill would constitute duplication of office.
They explained that since the Bureau of Statistics performing the same function was in existence in the state, it was not necessary to create another office.
According to them, it is a waste of public fund if the bill is passed.
The member representing Oke-Ero constituency, Abraham Ashaolu, and his counterpart from IIorin East Constituency, Hajia Nimata Ibrahim, said the bill was not in conformity with the 1999 constitution.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Gana Yissa, who presided over plenary, urged the state government to allocate more funds to the Bureau of Statistics to enable it perform effectively.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill was sent to the House on Jan. 21 and scaled through first reading on Jan. 22.
The House also directed its Committee on Works, Energy and Transport to liaiase with the state Ministry of Works and Transport on the reconstruction of Moro and Ohan bridges which collapsed.
The House gave the directive in a resolution after adopting a motion on matter of urgent public importance moved by Alhaji Suleiman Sunaboro representing IIesha-Gwanara Constituency.
The legislators urged the state government to urgently reconstruct the two bridges and claim the amount incurred from the Federal Government. (NAN)
