Senate, Reps Condemn Attack On Abe, Ndume
The leadership of the Senate has deplored the escalating political violence in Rivers State.
It particularly condemned last Sunday's violence which resulted to a serving Senator, Magnus Abe, being injured.
Senate's spokesman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Monday said that the Senate is disturbed that what should have been a peaceful gathering turned violent resulting in injuries.
He said no Nigerian blood is worth spilling in the name of politics.
"The Senate urges the Inspector General of Police to investigate the latest incident and ensure that it never recurs.
"In the same vein, the Senate advises politicians and their supporters to exercise greater restraint and avoid acts that will not only overheat the system but may harm the country's democracy," he said.
Also, the House of Representatives condemned the separate attacks on Senators Magnus Abe and Ali Ndume, calling on the relevant security agencies to investigate the incidents.
House spokesman Rep Zakari Mohammed (APC, Kwara) who briefed journalists in Abuja on Monday said "the attacks on Senators Abe and Ndume are highly condemnable, and we call on the relevant security agencies to investigate the matter."
He said the attacks on the two Senators call for a review of the rejection of state police, saying "with all these happenings, personally I believe those calling for state police are not out of place."
Zakari said with the current arrangement, if anything is happening in a state, one cannot have the police in that state to act quickly until he goes through a long process of contacting people in Abuja. "But with state police, there will be instant response for such things to be contained," he said.
"Any attack on innocent citizens is condemnable, more so that these ones were carried out by security agencies. It's really sad. Ndume was in a convoy, and all they said was that they suspected the convoy. It's sad that they could do that," he said.
He also said that in line with the timeframe the lawmakers gave themselves, the House will conclude the current constitution amendment process in June this year and submit it to the president for his assent.
He said the amended constitution will contain only those things agreed by Nigerians during the public sessions held.
