Senate crisis: Saraki, Lawan's camps working on truce

Date: 2016-03-18

Key players in the camp of Senate President Bukola Saraki are holding secret meetings with the camp of his main rival, Senator Ahmed Lawan, Daily Trust has reliably gathered.

Saraki emerged the Senate president on June 9 last year, following his alleged alliance with the senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lawan, (APC, Yobe North) was the preferred candidate of the APC.

The meetings, our correspondent reliably gathered, started last week, and have been going on secretly.

At one of the meetings on Wednesday, our correspondent saw Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima (APC, Zamfara West), Senator Lawan, Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central) and Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina South). The Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) appeared at the meeting briefly.

A source told our correspondent that Wednesday’s meeting, which was held at the office of a ranking senator, was not the first.

Yarima, a former governor of Zamfara State, nominated Saraki for the position of Senate president when the upper chamber was inaugurated.

Saraki is facing a 13-count charge at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) bordering on false assets declaration while he was Governor of Kwara State.  The case is coming up today (Friday).

Speaking on the alliance, a senator said the meeting had nothing to do with the trial of Saraki at the CCT. He said five persons were drawn from each of the camp.

According to him,  the truce was brokered by elders from across the country.
