Opobiyi laments decline in teachers' quality
Opobiyi stated this in a chat with Pilot Education in his office while assessing the state of education in the country.
He noted that the quality of teachers had worsen because trained teachers are not interested in the profession due to the poor welfare packages for teachers in the country.
“The quality of teachers has dropped because of the mad rush for certification. This has adversely affected performance of students.
“Trained teachers are no longer interested in the teaching profession instead they rush for unrelated discipline such as custom, immigration, where they are paid higher wages. Teachers no longer show dedication and commitment to their jobs.
Speaking further, the educationist stressed, “Education in Nigeria has evolved over the years, in the past focus was more on theory but now the teaching method in tertiary institutions has evolved from theoretical oriented to emphasis on practical and it is tailored to inculcate entrepreneurial skill in students in view of the prevailing circumstances.”
