Be Cautious In Signing Death Warrants, CAN Advises Governors

Date: 2013-07-12

Fawenu made the appeal in Ilorin yesterday, saying governors should not rush into signing death warrants to avoid executing innocent people.

"We should be very careful in signing death warrants so that we don't pass capital judgment on the innocent.

"The nation's judiciary should be more meticulous in the discharge of its constitutional duties, particularly in the area of criminal cases.

"If anybody must face death penalty, our judiciary should be meticulous in handling such cases", Fawenu said.

He said that rather than issue death warrants governors should consider clemency in cases that were not clear to them.

"Clemency should be given to those that will not constitute further threat to the security and peace of the nation.

"God punishes the unrighteous, but we must make sure we don't punish the innocent," Fawenu said.
