Kwara Gov. Calls for New Revenue Sharing Formula
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has called for the review of the revenue allocation formula in favour of states and local governments to reflect the activities of those levels of government.
He noted that such a review is expedient because the tiers of government are closer to the people and carry out such responsibilities as provision of primary health care, education and even repair of federal roads.
Governor Ahmed made the call at an interactive session with the participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 5 of the Institute of Security Studies, who paid him a courtesy visit in Ilorin.
He described security as key to national development, adding that Kwara State maintains synergy with the security agencies through the provision of equipment and other facilities.
The governor however advised governments at all levels to implement policies that are people oriented as part of easing what he called the "unusual security situation facing the country".
According to him, "If the issues of human capital development, youth empowerment and education are not properly addressed, the security challenge will remain unresolved on sustainable basis."
Governor Ahmed said his administration marshaled out policies premised on shared prosperity designed to ensure that human capital development, economic development, employment generation, social service development are tied to judicious uses of available resources.
He harped on the need for state governments to promote agriculture as the pivot of driving non oil sector economic growth.
Ahmed disclosed that Kwara State Government had through the Bridge Empowerment Scheme, KWABES, confronted the threatening menace of unemployment. "We now have statistics of our unemployed youths and working relentlessly to engaging them in productive sectors of the economy.
The Governor also said that a first class international institute for technical education will be established in the state to power the promotion of qualitative technical education in the Country.
