Corrupt Judges Should Go - Akanbi
Former Court of Appeal President, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has lauded the recent disciplinary action taken against some judges, saying such should continue until corrupt elements are completely wiped out of the bench.
Justice Akanbi in an interview with Daily Trust at the weekend lamented that the judiciary which is expected to be above board has found itself in the cockpit of corruption, saying the founding fathers of Nigerian judiciary never envisaged a situation where judges would be corrupt.
The NJC under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, recently suspended Justice Charles Archibong of the Federal High Court, Lagos and Justice Thomas Naron of the High Court of Justice, Plateau state just as it ordered the probe of Justice Abubakar Talba of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
Justice Akanbi said any judge found to be corrupt must not only be sacked, but he should be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
He said, "Any of them (judges) who is corrupt should be wiped out, should be sacked. If he has committed a crime, he should be tried and prosecuted so that others may learn lessons from that. I think we need more of this before the image of the judiciary can be fully redeemed. We only hope that their number would reduce until we are able to wipe them out from the judiciary."
