Over 1,600 athletes from all 16 local government areas are expected to compete in the upcoming Kwara State Sports Festival, scheduled for August 21 to 29 at the George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin.

Unveiling the official mascot and logo for the multi-sport event, the Kwara State Sports Commission confirmed the festival will feature 28 sporting events. Each local government area is permitted to register up to 100 athletes.

However, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr. Steve Olarinoye, noted that baseline participation is projected at around 700 athletes, depending on final council entries.

Olarinoye stated that preparations are over 60 percent complete. Accreditation will commence on Friday, August 21, preceding the official opening ceremony on Saturday.

Executive Chairman of the Commission and Main Organising Committee Chairman, Mallam Bola Mogaji, highlighted that the tournament aims to foster youth development, showcase the state's sports infrastructure, and promote unity across the local councils.

The week-long event is also anticipated to stimulate local economic activity, boosting revenue for hospitality, transport, retail, and vendor services across the state capital.
