Rescued Kwara Nurse Delivered 10 Babies with Bare Hands During Six Months in Captivity

Date: 2026-08-08

A nurse rescued after nearly six months in captivity has recounted how she delivered 10 babies with her bare hands while being held by terrorists following the February 3 attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Amirah Salihu, the daughter of Woro's chief, Umar Salihu, said the captives endured severe hunger, poor living conditions and prolonged exposure to rainfall during their ordeal.

Speaking on national television in an account reported by Diamond FM, Salihu said she was compelled to assist pregnant women who went into labour after the abductors discovered that she was a nurse.

She said she carried out the deliveries without gloves or proper medical equipment, relying solely on her training and available resources to assist the women.

According to her, the captives were often forced to survive on guinea corn, salt and seasoning throughout their period in captivity.

Salihu disclosed that the abductors later attempted to persuade her to remain with them because of her nursing skills, but she refused.

She also revealed that two of her brothers were killed during the attack, which resulted in the abduction of scores of women and children from the communities.

The victims were rescued on Wednesday after spending nearly six months in captivity. The Kwara State Government later disclosed that 13 children had died during the ordeal, while 12 others were still unaccounted for.

Following their release, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited some of the rescued victims receiving medical treatment in Ilorin, including women who gave birth while in captivity.

The rescued victims are expected to receive continued medical, psychological and welfare support as authorities work to help them recover from the trauma and reintegrate into their communities.
