Emir of Ilorin Commends Ilorin-born Islamic scholar for Translating Qur'an into Yoruba and English
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has commended Ilorin-born Islamic scholar, Dr Daud Awwal, for translating the Holy Qur'an from Arabic into Yoruba and English, describing the achievement as a significant contribution to Islamic scholarship and religious education.
The Emir gave the commendation while receiving Dr Awwal at his palace in Ilorin, where the scholar presented copies of his newly completed work-a full translation of the Holy Qur'an into Yoruba and English-alongside a transliteration edition designed to help non-Arabic speakers recite the Qur'an with correct pronunciation.
Sulu-Gambari described Awwal as a worthy ambassador of the Ilorin Emirate and an outstanding member of the Nigerian diaspora in the United Kingdom, applauding his commitment to advancing scholarship and promoting Islamic values despite residing abroad.
He noted that the translation would help preserve the Islamic heritage of the Ilorin Emirate while making the teachings of the Holy Qur'an more accessible to Yoruba- and English-speaking Muslims.
"This is a landmark achievement that will go a long way in preserving the Islamic cultural heritage of Ilorin Emirate and making the divine message of the Holy Qur'an accessible to a wider audience, particularly our people who are more proficient in Yoruba and English," the Emir said.
Earlier, Dr Awwal expressed appreciation to the Emir for his continuous support and encouragement of scholars within and outside the Ilorin Emirate.
He explained that the translation project was undertaken to bridge language barriers and enable Yoruba- and English-speaking Muslims to better understand, recite and reflect on the teachings of the Holy Qur'an.
According to him, the transliteration edition was specifically produced to assist people who cannot read Arabic script but desire to recite the Qur'an accurately through a pronunciation guide.
Dr Awwal expressed optimism that the translation and transliteration editions would promote a deeper understanding of Islam and make Qur'anic teachings more accessible to a wider audience.
