A fire outbreak triggered by a power surge has destroyed four rooms in a storey building located at No. 40 Elesinla Street, off Agbo-Oba Road, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, was contained by firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service, preventing the blaze from spreading to the remaining parts of the building and neighbouring properties.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the agency responded promptly to the emergency and successfully brought the fire under control.

He disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials within the affected section of the building.

According to him, the swift intervention of firefighters limited the damage to four rooms, saving the rest of the building from destruction.

Adekunle advised residents to ensure that electrical installations in their homes are carried out by qualified professionals and fitted with standard surge protection devices to minimise the risk of fire outbreaks caused by electrical fluctuations.

He also urged property owners to conduct regular inspections and maintenance of electrical wiring and to avoid overloading electrical sockets, stressing that adherence to electrical safety measures remains essential to preventing avoidable fire incidents.
