National Democratic Congress Signals Strong Push for Relevance in Kwara 2027
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is positioning itself as an emerging third force in Kwara State politics, signalling a deliberate push to disrupt the dominance of established parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At its state congress, the party moved beyond routine internal exercises, unveiling a strategy anchored on aggressive grassroots mobilisation, consensus leadership, and broad-based political realignments. Party leaders used the gathering to project confidence that growing voter dissatisfaction with traditional political structures could open space for a new bloc built on internal cohesion and local engagement.
Former chairman of Patigi Local Government, Arc. Rev. Thomas Audu Gana, made it clear that the party intends to avoid the internal crises that have weakened larger parties, insisting that consensus not imposition would define its leadership process.
"Consensus reduces conflict and strengthens unity. Parties that impose candidates weaken themselves from within," he said.
He disclosed that consultations are already underway to identify candidates with both credibility and grassroots appeal, signalling early moves to build a competitive structure ahead of the election cycle.
Newly elected state chairman, Alhaji Fatai J. Imam, reinforced the party's outsider positioning, pointing to a shift in voter behaviour away from long-standing party loyalties.
"People are beginning to look beyond party labels. What matters now is performance and connection with the grassroots," he said.
Imam described the congress as more than a routine exercise, calling it a "reset moment" aimed at transferring influence from elite power blocs to community-level actors, particularly young people.
The NDC's posture comes amid subtle but growing political recalculations in Kwara, where opposition elements and smaller parties are exploring new alignments to counter entrenched dominance.
By prioritising grassroots structures and internal unity early, the party appears to be betting that consistency not last-minute alliances could define the next electoral upset.
With consultations ongoing and its messaging sharpening, the NDC is clearly signalling that it intends not just to participate in 2027, but to compete for relevance in a state long shaped by established political forces.
