Kwara Sarkin Fulani Raises Alarm Over Kidnap of Relative, Seeks Urgent Action
The Sarkin Fulani of Kwara State, Adam Abdullahi, has appealed to both the Federal and Kwara State Governments to strengthen efforts to combat insecurity in the state and across Nigeria.
Abdullahi made the call on Monday during a press conference held at Idigbawere Harmony Estate, off Abdulsalam Community, Zone D2, Ilorin, where he expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation and the economic hardship facing his community.
He disclosed that his younger brother's wife and three children were recently abducted by suspected kidnappers, who are reportedly demanding a ransom of N60 million. He lamented that the victims remain in captivity.
The traditional leader decried what he described as repeated attacks on his community, alleging that armed bandits frequently invade homes, kill residents, and disrupt daily life.
He urged the government to act swiftly to secure the release of the abducted victims, restore safety in affected communities, and address lingering land and security concerns. Abdullahi also called for comprehensive and sustainable policies to tackle kidnapping and banditry, alongside improved land-use management to prevent recurring conflicts.
Highlighting economic pressures contributing to rising tensions, he noted the absence of designated grazing reserves for cattle, saying the lack of grazing land has intensified disputes and left pastoral communities increasingly vulnerable.
Abdullahi further advocated the integration of local vigilante groups and hunters into a structured forest guard system to address the growing insecurity across the state. According to him, such groups possess extensive knowledge of the terrain and are well-positioned to secure forested areas.
He added that porous borders and shared languages have made it easier for criminal elements to infiltrate communities and evade detection.
The bandits, he said, often operate from forest hideouts, carrying out kidnappings and attacks before disappearing without a trace.
The Sarkin Fulani emphasised that sustained collaboration between communities and security agencies supported by credible local intelligence and strong government backing remains essential to restoring lasting peace.
