ABS Ilorin FC Demands Sanctions Over Rival Club's Use of Ineligible Player
Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC have called on the Nigeria National League (NNL) and relevant football authorities to sanction a rival club after a dispute over the use of an ineligible player allegedly influenced the outcome of an NNL match.
The club insists that rules were breached during the fixture and wants disciplinary action taken against the opposing team and individuals involved.
ABS Ilorin's protest centres on claims that the opposing side fielded a player who was not properly registered or cleared to play, thereby gaining an unfair advantage. The Ilorin-based side has stressed that such infractions undermine the integrity and fairness of competition in the NNLNigeria's second-tier football division.
The club is urging the NNL and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to investigate the matter thoroughly and apply appropriate sanctions if violations are confirmed. ABS Ilorin believes that decisive action would send a strong message about upholding league rules and encourage compliance by all participating teams.
In football at every level, the principle remains inviolate: competitions are only as credible as the rules that govern them. When clubs raise legitimate concerns about the eligibility of players on match day, it is incumbent upon the league and its administrators to respond with clarity, urgency, and impartiality.
ABS Ilorin FC's call for sanctions over the alleged use of an ineligible player should not be dismissed as mere grievance. It reflects a broader issue that has periodically surfaced in Nigerian domestic football: the enforcement of registration, documentation, and eligibility regulations. These rules exist not to constrain clubs, but to protect fair play, competitive balance, and the integrity of results.
If a team fields an unregistered or improperly cleared player, the impact is not only on a single match result it also undermines the collective confidence of all teams that abide by the rules. Football history, both in Nigeria and globally, shows that when eligibility breaches occur and go unpunished, resentment festers and expectations of accountability erode. Indeed, similar disputes in other leagues have seen matches overturned and points awarded in favour of compliant sides after review.
The NNL and the NFF must approach this controversy with transparency. A thorough, evidence-based investigation should determine whether rules were truly violated. If so, sanctions should follow whether fines, forfeiture of points or other penalties commensurate with the offence. Such clarity would reinforce that Nigerian league structures are governed by standards as exacting as those in other professional systems, encouraging better administration and adherence to regulations by all clubs.
Ultimately, enforcing eligibility rules is not about punishing a club it is about safeguarding the credibility of the competition and ensuring that every team, every supporter and every stakeholder knows that results are earned on a level playing field.
