Safety Warning: COREN Kwara Intensifies Campaign Against Substandard Steel Sale to Curb Building Collapse
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Kwara State Chapter, has intensified its campaign against the sale of substandard steel in Ilorin, warning dealers to adhere strictly to engineering standards.
The enforcement exercise was carried out by the State Technical Committee on Engineering Regulation Monitoring (STC-ERM), led by its chairman, Engr Bashiru Lawal. The team visited several steel shops within the Ilorin metropolis, where traders were cautioned against selling low-grade materials considered unsafe for construction purposes.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the inspection, Engr. Lawal said the operation forms part of COREN's renewed efforts to curb the recurring cases of building and infrastructure collapse across Kwara State. He noted that strict compliance with approved standards remains vital to safeguarding lives and promoting structural durability.
"At COREN Kwara, we urge sellers and buyers to engage qualified professionals who understand what materials to purchase and how best to use them. We will not tolerate substandard products," he stated.
Engr. Lawal added that the committee has issued warnings to all shops visited and will soon embark on a follow-up inspection. According to him, any steel found to be substandard during subsequent visits will be confiscated.
