Kwara HMB Investigates Cottage Hospital Over Claims of Poor Labour Management and Staff Misconduct
The Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) has announced that it has launched a formal investigation into allegations of medical negligence at Cottage Hospital, Adewole/Olorunsogo, Ilorin.
The action follows a viral report by Just Event Online TV detailing the death of a newborn and severe complications suffered by the mother during childbirth.
The report, shared on Facebook by the patient's relative, Fatimah, and subsequently published by the news platform, accuses healthcare workers of:
- Poor conduct and unprofessional behaviour.
- Improper management of labour.
- Mishandling of the newborn at birth.
- Concerns about the referral process.
According to the HMB, on their official Facebook page, the case was officially reported to the Board on Wednesday night, November 19, 2025, prompting the immediate deployment of a fact-finding team early Thursday morning.
The team is currently reviewing clinical records, interviewing staff who were on duty, and engaging directly with the affected family to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
In a statement, the Board reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of maternal and neonatal care across state-owned facilities, stressing that all allegations of negligence are treated with utmost seriousness. It assured that the investigation will be thorough, fair, and transparent, with appropriate administrative and clinical actions to follow based on verified findings.
The HMB expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and pledged to provide further updates as more details emerge from the ongoing inquiry.
