Kwara Police Arrest Suspects in Foiled Kidnapping and Robbery Plot
The Kwara State Police Command has successfully foiled a planned armed robbery and kidnapping plot in Ilorin, Kwara State, and arrested the suspects said to be at the centre of the scheme.
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday night by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
According to Ejire-Adeyemi, the incident was reported on November 10 by one Abdulazeez Ishaq of Gerewu, Ilorin, after his friend, Adekoya Opeyemi, popularly known as 'Justice', allegedly confessed that he had been contracted to kill him and steal his Honda Accord (2013 model).
Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that Abdulazeez informed the police that the suspect confessed to being hired by one Abdulwahab Ahmad to eliminate him and take his vehicle.
The suspect claimed he was instructed to tie the victim, lock him inside the car's trunk and drive to the Unity area, where Abdulwahab planned to take possession of the vehicle before proceeding to Ibadan.
She added that operatives acted swiftly on the intelligence while guiding the complainant to cooperate for a successful sting operation.
"The police mounted surveillance immediately and advised the complainant to play along.
"The suspect, Adekoya, was arrested at the agreed location while attempting to receive the vehicle. This decisive action prevented what would have been a fatal robbery and kidnapping," the PPRO stated.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, praised the officers for their prompt intervention, describing the operation as "evidence of the command's readiness to confront criminals in the state."
"We encourage residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities. Policing is a shared responsibility, and credible information from the public continues to help us foil criminal plots," he said.
The commissioner also commended the Inspector-General of Police, GP Kayode Egbetokun, saying, "The strategic leadership of the IGP has continued to yield positive results in the fight against crime nationwide."
The police noted that the suspects are currently in custody, while an investigation into the foiled operation is ongoing.
On Wednesday, the Ogun State Police Command foiled a robbery attempt in Sagamu and impounded the operational car brought by the thieves.
The Police Police Public Relations of the state command, CSP Omolola Odutola, explained that at about 1:45 am on Wednesday, a distress call was received through the CDC Chairman of Okearedi, Araromi, off Sagamu–Ijebu Ode Expressway, that about five hoodlums were attempting to forcefully gain entry into a residence within the community.
