Two Dead in Petrol Tanker Fire on Ilorin-Jebba Expressway
Two people have died following a petrol tanker accident that occurred at Pasa village on the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, at approximately 3:43 p.m.
According to a statement by Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Kwara State Fire Service, the incident involved a fuel tanker with registration number NSR 966 ZQ, carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and overturned triggering a massive fire.
Emergency response teams from the Fire Service arrived promptly at the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicles and structures.
Despite swift intervention, two individuals lost their lives in the incident. The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the initial loss of control is under investigation, while traffic was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews cleared the site.
"Sadly, the driver and the motor boy lost their lives immediately at the scene of the accident", the statement said.
Speaking on the incident, the Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, commiserated with the families of the deceased and advised all road users, particularly tanker drivers, to exercise the highest level of caution on highways.
He emphasised the need for regular vehicle maintenance, strict adherence to speed limits, avoidance of night journeys where possible, and proper rest for drivers to prevent fatigue-related accidents.
He further urged motorists to always keep fire extinguishers in their vehicles and to promptly report emergencies to the Fire Service for timely intervention.
