Group empowers students, teachers of Kwara community
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Leap Africa's Youth Leadership Development Programme embarked on the 'Action on Rural Education Development' initiative aimed at improving quality education in the rural Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This was made known by the Team lead and project manager, Olorunniyi Taiwo Phillip, in Illorin, the Kwara state capital.
“Our passionate team of young change leaders from the University of Ilorin drove this initiative under the guidance of Leap Africa's Youth Leadership Development Programme. Thanks to the support from the Nigeria Youth Futures fund, we were able to make a real impact on the lives of students and teachers in this underserved community, all while promoting the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education.
“The journey began with understanding the challenges faced by the local schools. In the past, no notable professionals had emerged from this area, and we saw that schools lacked essential facilities, had few qualified teachers, and faced financial struggles. Poverty and gender inequality further hindered children's access to education.
“To make a difference, we took action by providing much-needed relief materials to the schools. By addressing the infrastructural gaps and offering support to students and teachers, we created a better learning environment for everyone involved.
“Our efforts didn't stop there. We also worked hard on a policy paper, backed by thorough research and data, to draw attention to the urgent need for intervention from the government and other stakeholders. We want to see increased investment in rural education and a fair distribution of resources to ensure equal opportunities for all children.
“Throughout this journey, we were fueled by our dedication to creating positive change. We strongly believe that quality education is essential for every child, regardless of where they come from or their background. Our project not only impacted the students and teachers in Baruten but also inspired hope and showed what can be achieved when determined youth come together to make a difference.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to Leap Africa's Youth Leadership Development Programme for guiding and empowering us as young change leaders. Their support has been invaluable in equipping us with the knowledge and skills needed to drive lasting change in our communities.
“We want to thank our amazing team members, ( Olorunniyi Taiwo Philip, Utenwo-ojo Abraham, Hinmikaiye Faith, AbdulQuyumm Yusuf & Adeshina Jeremiah) mentor, sponsors, implementing partner— Saving African Youths Dream Initiative who joined hands with us to make this project possible. This is more than just an initiative; it's a testament to what youth can achieve when we work together for a brighter, more inclusive future.
“Let this be an inspiration to others, showing that every small step towards quality education can lead to tremendous social impact and contribute to a better world for all.”
