The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu-Gambari, said on Monday that he would support the proposed Emir of Ilorin's Cup, organised in the emirate to celebrate his 28 years on the throne.

Zulu-Gambari gave the assurance when he hosted the Ilorin Emirate Football Council, organisers of the proposed football championship.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Emir of Ilorin's Cup is a football championship organised by the Ilorin Emirate Football Council, a body which comprises of all the five local football councils under the Emirate.

Speaking at the event, Zulu-Gambari commended the organisers for the idea and promised to support it.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the main organising committee, who is also the Chairman of Ilorin West Local Football Council, Alhaji Owolabi Wopa, revealed that the tournament would discover talents that abound in the Emirate.

“The tournament is borne out of the need to discover football talents within the Ilorin Emirate and showcase them to the world at large.”

He noted that the tournament would also be organised to also foster unity in the Emirate.

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bola Mogaji has donated a trophy to support the tournament.

Mogaji, while receiving the committee in his office on Monday commended the organisers, adding that the tournament would further raise the bar of football development within the Emirate.

The registration for the tournament which is open to all football clubs within the five local government areas under the Emirate will hold between July 15 and August 31.

While the tournament is expected to kick-off in September with a specific date to be announced by the committee, the final match would be played on Nov. 11, being the day for the Emir's coronation anniversary.
