Nigerian Speakers, Endangered Species - Atunwa
The Speaker Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Rasak Atunwa, has said the frequent impeachment of speakers of houses of assembly portend a great danger to the nation's democracy.
He spoke in Ilorin, against the backdrop of the process that led to the impeachment of the Kogi State Speaker, Abdullahi Bello.
Atunwa said it was worrisome that the lawmakers that were supposed to be stabilising factors in the growth of democracy could be manipulated by the executive.
He stated that there was the need to ensure stability of the legislature.
He said, "Nigeria speakers are now endangered species and the situation is becoming troubling. If there is no stable leadership in the legislative arm of government, it becomes precarious and causes instability in the polity".
"At least, instead of 17 that was purportedly said to have impeached the Kogi State House of Assembly Speaker, Bello, only 13 were seen in the newspaper advertorial as the people said to have impeached him."
According to him, the 13 members purported to have impeached the speaker did not constitute the two third majority of the 25 members house which is the constitutional requirement necessary.
