KWHA Passes Health Insurance Law

Date: 2012-09-28

The Kwara State House of Assembly has passed into law, the state Health Insurance Scheme Bill, 2012.

The bill scaled through third reading and final passage on Wednesday.

The passage followed the final consideration of the legislature on report of its committee on health and environment.

The Speaker, Barrister Rasak Atunwa said the bill had satisfied the constitutional requirements of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended and rules of the House.

Atunwa, however, directed the Clerk to prepare a neat copy of the passed bill for the governor's assent.

The bill seeks for a law to establish the state community health insurance scheme to provide access to affordable healthcare for low income earners.

Speaking to Assembly correspondents, the chairman of the Health Committee, Hon. Monde Aliyu Umar, said the law was part of the state government commitment to ensuring free healthcare delivery.

He said: "The law is going to take care of the low income earners, the farmers and labourers.  The state government is going to pay 90 percentage of the insurance scheme, while each beneficiary will pay just ten per cent.

"The scheme is going to be in the form of enrolment and the state government is trying to encourage free healthcare by making health facilities available and accessible to the citizenry."
