Rainstorm: Kwara Assembly urges KWSG, Councils to Resuscitate Tree Planting Policy

As part of measures to avert incessant rainstorms in Kwara state, the State House of Assembly has called on both State and Local Government Councils in the state to resuscitate tree planting policy.

The call was sequel to a Motion on the "Need to Provide Relief Materials for Victims of Rainstorm Disaster in Kwara state" sponsored by member representing Ilorin North - West Constituency, Hon Abdul Rafiu Abdul Rahman.

Reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker Chief Matthew Okedare, who presided over the Wednesday's sitting, said the resuscitation of the policy of " cut - one - plant - two" under the tree planting campaign will go along way to avert future rain storm disaster and desertification in the state.

The Parliament according to the Deputy Speaker, while comesserating with the victims, urged the state government to provide relief materials to the victims to alleviate their sufferings.

It also enjoined the State Ministry of Information and Communication to intensify its awareness campaign on the dangers inherent in indiscriminate felling of trees, to make the people of the state, imbibe the culture of tree planting

Hon Abdul Rahman had while raising the Motion enumerated areas affected by the rainstorm in his Constituency and called for prompt government's response .

The House at its Wednesday's sitting also called on the State Ministry of Justice to ensure that those arrested in connection with killings in Kaiama were prosecuted to ensure Justice.

The Parliament made call while considering a Matter of General Public Importance raised by member representing Bani/ Adena/Gweria Constituency, Hon Suleiman Baziki on the need to ensure prompt persecution of those arrested in connection with the killings and praised government for restoring peace in the area,through prompt deployment of troops to the area.

Meanwhile, the House has mandated Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the State to submit their performance sheet on the first quarter of 2018 budget to its Public Account Committee for scrutiny, latest by the end of April.

The resolution was sequel to the Matter of General Public Importance raised by the House Leader and member representing Essay/Shawo/ Igboidun Constituency, Hon Hassan Oyeleke on the decayed infrastructure at the Ilorin and Offa Stadia,

It would be recalled that the House had December last year passed 2018 budget to fast track its implementation.
