NLC Commends Kwara Assembly Over Passage of Bill Suspending Pension To Ex-Govs, Deputies

Date: 2018-03-02

The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commended the State House of Assembly for passing a bill stopping payment of pension to former governors, deputy governors, and other officers holding political offices after their tenure in office.

The House on Tuesday passed the bill after considering the report of the House Committee on Establishment and Public Service at the Committee of the Whole House sitting in Ilorin.

In a press release signed by the NLC Chairman, Comrade Yekini Agunbiade on Thursday, the labour union said that the passage of the bill reflects the lawmakers' commitment to the interest of the masses.

Agunbiade noted that the passing of the bill is also a pointer to the type of people that should be voted into power for good governance to be achieved.

The labour leader recalled that the union had in the past kicked against the pension bill, particularly during the public hearing on the Contributory Pension Bill brought before the House.

He, therefore, applauded the Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad and other members of the House for passing the bill.

Agunbiade also called on other states in the country to emulate Kwara state and stop payment of pensions to former governors still holding elective or appointive positions.

He also pledged the unflinching support of the union to the State government under the leadership of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
