Unilorin to Establish Geological Research Centre in Aran-Orin
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin Professor Is-haq Oloyede says the University of Ilorin has submitted its proposal to Education Trust Fund ETF to withdraw about three billion naira out of the four point two billion naira special intervention fund by the federal government. The Vice Chancellor stated this when he hosted members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ to a special Iftar at the Vice Chancellor's Lodge.
Professor Oloyede said within the next two week the effects of the funds would start to be seen by the people as the University would be committing about one hundred million to the establishment of the UNILORIN geological research Center in Aran-Orin, in the Irepodun local government of the State.
He said it took the University several stages of planning and re-planning as it is conscious that questions on how the money was judiciously spent would be asked. The Vice Chancellor said the University would build a brand new faculty of arts block, brand new faculty of education stating that the university has spent about half a billion naira to upgrade the stadium and as such the faculty of education would be moved close to the stadium so as to ensure proper use and mentainance of the facilities.
Professor Oloyede said the department of Veterinary Medicine would move to the current location of the University secondary while the Secondary School would be moved to the Mini Campus to make the school an international secondary school. He said the University established the Center for Ilorin studies where all publications of Ilorin scholars' would be found as well as people in any discipline who are of Ilorin origin including writings of the University of Ilorin scholars.
Professor Oloyede said the University will through the special intervention fund rehabilitate all labs and build two new ones. He said the federal government had committed over nine hundred million dollars to tertiary education in the country while stating that with discipline, God consciousness and proper monitoring will bring about the desired transformation of the education sector.
The Vice Chancellor said the university will judiciously make use of the four point one billion naira special intervention fund by the federal government stating that the university plans to establish a stimulation center for the college of health science and as well automate the university library so as to have all the hard copies of the books in the library in soft copies.
The Vice Chancellor said the University of Ilorin is a structured University and as such has fixed its convocation ceremony for twenty third of every year as the University does not celebrate individuals. Professor Oloyede said at the University of Ilorin the effects of the Intervention fund would be seen as the University will properly utilize the funds. He said the university will grow forward as it is investing seriously in different avenues and saving for the raining days.
The Vice Chancellor had earlier solicited the support of members of the press un-behalf of the Vice Chancellor designate Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali while appreciating the University Council for the quick decision which will avail the out-going and incoming Vice Chancellors the opportunity to work together and plan properly before finally taking over the mantle of leadership.
He appealed to members of the press to show the incoming vice chancellor same support throughout his tenure urging them to see their service to the University as institutional.Professor Oloyede commended the founding fathers of the University for building a solid foundation as the university no longer competes with other universities that were established in the same generation stating that the University has been able to show that it is not how long but how well.
He said the Incoming Vice Chancellor has assured that he will only do better stating that its human to predict the future assuring that the university will continue to grow from strength to strength.
Earlier the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ in Kwara State Abiodun Abdulkareem thanked the Vice Chancellor for being a very good friend to members of the press stating that the NUJ will always contribute to the development of the University. He appreciated the VC for his unflinching support to the union while appreciating him for transforming the University positively and making members of the University alumnus always proud to be associated with the University.
While giving the vote of thanks the Immediate past deputy director of corporate affairs, Dr. Mahfouz Adedimeji appreciated the Vice Chancellor for the opportunity given to him to serve as it has not only helped in boosting him but also to discover some of the challenges he could face. Dr. Adedimeji then appreciated members of the press for their constant and unflinching support to the University while encouraging them to continue so as to help the university grow.
