Ahmed wants transparent local council system for Nigeria
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State yesterday, advocated for a viable and self-accounting local government system in Nigeria to effectively address the unpalatable challenge of non-settlement of entitlements of workers at that tier of government.
Ahmed, who spoke yesterday in Ilorin, stressed that "the present third tier of government is created and structured along political exigencies rather than being self-sustaining".
Receiving a delegation from the Church Leaders and Ministers Fellowship of Nigeria at the Government House, Ilorin, Ahmed urged solution rather than the blame game occasioned by dwindling revenues from oil, the nation's major foreign earner.
On the suspension of the state Bridge Employment Scheme (KWABES), which served as a social safety net between permanent employment and unemployment, the governor explained that the scheme could no longer be sustained owing to lean finances.
He, however, disclosed that government had enhanced the Small Scale and Medium Enterprises (SSME) financing scheme which the KWABES interns could assess through cooperative groups.
