Kwara Assembly tasks Works ministry on standard bridges construction, road projects execution
The Kwara State House of Assembly has urged State Ministry of Works and Transport not to compromise standard in execution of bridges and road projects to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property in the state.
This followed a motion on "Rehabilitation of some Bridges in Ilorin Metropolis" sponsored by a member representing Irepodun Constituency Hon. Mattew Babaoye.
The House had while considering the motion noted with displeasure that state Ministry of Works and Transport had compromised standard in construction and reconstruction of some bridges, thereby making such bridges not to stand the test of time before giving way.
Reading the House resolutions, Deputy Speaker, Elder Mattew Okedare called on Government's relevant agencies to visit the brigdes along New Yidi road, Unity road, Coca cola, Seriki-Kanhun, Pipeline road, Limca Junction and Omosebi in Ilorin Metropolis with a view to urgently put them in proper shape to ensure unhindered vehicular movement.
Hon. Babaoye had while presenting the motion noted that present state of the bridges called for government's urgent attention in view of current intensity of rainfall in the State.
Other members while speaking on the motion identified shoddy execution of project contractors, poor maintenance culture and irregular test for bridges as reasons why most of bridges in the metropolis gave way thereby resulting to loss of lives and property in the state.
The State House of Assembly also directed State Emergency and Relief Services to visit areas ravaged by recent rainstorm in Patigi, Edu and part of Ifelodun Local Government Areas with a view to providing pallative measure for people affected by storm.
This was part of resolutions reached by the House following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance on ‘ The Rainstorm that destroyed Houses in Patigi, Edu, and part of Ifelodun Local Government areas of the State
The House also called on affluent individuals in the affected areas to assist victims to enable them live a normal life. Also a Bill for a law to amend Kwara State Land Charge Law tagged " Kwara State Charge (Amendment) Bill 2016? passed through second reading at the floor of the House.
The Bill which was read for second time by Clerk to the House, Simon Okedare sought to empower among other things, the state’s Attorney General to prosecute any defaulter in the State Revenue Court, afford individuals opportunity to lodge any complain arising from land assessment and compensation due to acquisition by State Bureau of Lands. It equally empowered land owners to apply for reassessment of such land and State Bureau of Land the power to seal-off the premises of any defaulter.
