180 corps members for re-run election in Kwara

Date: 2012-06-29

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has engaged 180 corps members for the conduct of Saturday's re-run election in Ilorin North-West  state constituency. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kwara, Chief Timothy Ibitoye, made this known in Ilorin, on Thursday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the commission had already received the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) coordinator in the state, Mrs Ngozi Ezekwe, who was in the INEC office to ascertain the security of the corps members.

The commissioner said the re-run election would only hold in Balogun-Alanamu and Oloje wards out of the 12 wards in Ilorin North-West state constituency.

Ibitoye said the commission had made all necessary arrangements to conduct a hitch-free re-run election in the two wards.

According to him, both sensitive and non-sensitive materials had been received. He said the materials were in the custody of the commission and that they were being properly sorted out for the election.

He said there were 60 polling units in the two wards where the election would hold on Saturday.

According to him, the 180 corps members, two collation officers from the University of Ilorin and one returning officer were currently undergoing two-day intensive training for the purpose of the election.

Ibitoye assured the electorate that the security of the ad-hoc staff and voters were guaranteed as the security agencies had mapped out solid security arrangements for the election.

The INEC chief warned miscreants and over ambitious politicians, who might wish to cause any security breach or foment  trouble, to stay away from the polling stations.

He also advised all observer groups who wanted to observe the election to update their status with the state office of the commission.
