Kwara Communal Clash: Share Community Appeals to Buhari to Intervene
The Share Descendants Union (SDU) in Kwara State monday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly intervene to avoid the alleged massive killings of innocent people of the community and destruction of property worth several millions of naira by the irate youths of Nupe speaking tribe of Tsaragi in the state.
Share and Tsaragi had been engaged in communal clash since last Saturday over a disputed land in the area. At least about 50 people have been injured while over 50 houses, schools and other property were allegedly vandalised by the suspected irate youths of Tsaragi during the fracas.
Armed soldiers from Sobi Barracks in Ilorin, the state capital, have been deployed to the two towns while the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the areas.
The state government yesterday set up a committee headed by the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Peter Kisra, to ascertain the level of damages in the two affected communities.
But, the union in a statement issued in Ilorin on monday which was made available to journalists stated that there was need for the President Buhari to set up the commission of inquiry in order to bring the perpetrators of the massive killings to book.
The statement signed by the union National Secretary, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, said: "The murderous acts have led to the massive destruction of lives and property as the Nigeria Police Force presence could not stop the act because of the weapons allegedly wielded by the youths of Tsaragi until the state government imposed curfew and deployed soldiers to the areas."
The statement further said: "As at the time of reporting this, large compounds namely Agodo, Ana, Sango, Sunjami, Oluawo, Olujide among others were razed completely by the irate youths of Tsaragi community.
'Also, UMCA, Jerusalem church, mission houses, UMCA primary and secondary schools, Old Native Authority School, Community High School among others were not spared in the attack."
The statement added that Share community is now calm because of the presence of soldiers deployed to the area. The community therefore called on the federal government to rise up to the ugly situation before it turns into another civil war in the country.
