Kwara primary school teachers cry out over unpaid salaries
Teachers in both primary and junior secondary schools in Kwara state have cried out to the state government over their three months outstanding salaries.
In a statement by the teachers under the aegis of "Concerned Teachers in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Kwara state", signed by its state coordinator, Alhaji Bello Isola and Secretary, Mrs. Dorcas Iyanda, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, the teachers said that the unpaid salaries had continued to have a toll in the fulfillment of their family obligations?.
"Most of us cannot pay for the school fees of our children in their schools Mama of paying our house rents", they said.
Reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede, said that the state government was committed to the welfare of its workforce including the teachers, adding that the dwindling federal allocations from N2.7billion to N1.2billion had affected its financial obligations.
The governor's aide said the state government had set up a stakeholders committee, which include the state Accountant General, 16 council chairmen and labour unions to meet with the Joint Account Allocations Committee (JAAC) on the payment of the outstanding salaries.
"The salaries being owed the affected teachers vary from one local government council to another. While some councils have paid up till September, some have paid half of September while others have not paid. But this would be sorted out as soon as the stakeholders committee and JAAC complete their works" he said. Akorede therefore appealed to the affected teachers to be patient with the state government, adding that the process of paying their salaries had commenced.
