Kwara House moves to regulate video houses against child abuse
The Kwara State House of Assembly has directed the state Ministry of Social Welfare, Sports and Youth Development as well as Environment and Forestry to constitute a joint task force that will regulate the operations of record studios in Ilorin metropolis to protect youth against vulnerability to various forms of child abuse, teenage pregnancy, avoidable accident and gangsterism.
This is part of resolutions by the House following a motion raised on loitering of young persons around record studios in Ilorin metropolis raised by a member representing Ilorin North West Constituency, Hon Abdulrafiu Abdulrahman.
The resolution became imperative as the activities of the record studios according to the House were exposing youth to unguided access to uncensored audio visual materials thereby promoting acts of indecency and promiscuity in the society.
While reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker, Hon Mathew Okedare who presided over the sitting equally directed the state Ministries of Social Development, Sports and Youth Development as well as that of Environment and Forestry to produce and broadcast Radio and Television jingles to sensitize members of the public on the dangers inherent in loitering around record studios at odd hours.
The House also called for immediate publicity and implementation of the Child Rights Law by the state government to protect children against acts capable of jeopardizing their future.
It equally urged parents and guardians to be more committed towards the upkeep of their children and wards to enhance their well being.
Hon. AbdulRafiu AbdulRahman who moved the motion said that he was worried that majority of children of school age always converge around record studios while government agencies saddled with the responsibility of implementing the provisions of Child Rights law and other extant law to check hawking and outright neglect of children were not living up to expectations.
Most members who spoke on the motion identified societal, parental and institutional problems and called on relevant agencies to rise to the challenge to enhance the wellbeing of the future generation.
